Category Trees That Survive Channel Splits

Why messy category hierarchies break omnichannel reviews — and a cleaner way to label clusters for merchandising conversations.

Omnichannel reviews stall when store uses “home soft” and online uses “bedding textiles” for the same goods. Category trees that survive channel splits share three traits: stable parent nodes, child labels buyers recognize, and a documented mapping for exceptions.

Rebuild from the parent down. Freeze names for a buying cycle once the tree is agreed. Temporary online tags for campaigns can hang off the tree without renaming the parent. That discipline makes sell-through charts comparable week to week.

A Bangkok example

A specialty chain we advised kept renaming online filters for search ranking while merchandising still planned on the old store hierarchy. The assortment review spent its first week only on labels. After the mapping sheet existed, channel gaps appeared in two days. Label work is unglamorous and usually the highest-leverage first step.
